Should We Visit Napa or Sonoma?

I often get asked this question.  I love both, for completely different reasons.  It's more of a Pinot Noir or Cabernet difference.  Sonoma has amazing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel.  Napa on the other hand, Cabernet is king.  This isn't to say that Sonoma doesn't make great Cabernets, or that there aren't awesome Pinot Noir's on the Napa side (Saintsbury being one of my favorites).  Sonoma has a rustic and rural charm to it.  Napa has some decadent dining and wineries.  If you are really torn between the two, do both!  When coming from San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge, make a stop in Sonoma.  Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are a great way to wake up your palate.  Then head over to Napa for lunch, and follow it up with some amazing big Cabernets.  Best of both worlds, problem solved!
